FermBiotics is a consume healthcare and microbiome focused company developing natural fermented seaweed and plant products for supporting gut health. FermBiotics’ vision is to produce fermented plant and seaweed products as food ingredients, dietary supplements and medical foods.
We combine prebiotics, probiotics and bioactives – a new category of food ingredients and dietary supplements we call FermBiotics. We have gained knowledge from microbiome studies combined with hands on knowledge of fermentation production.
Fermentation is a natural process and has been used for thousands of years to preserve food by lactic acid bacteria. The sugar from the food products is used by the lactic acid bacteria to make lactic acids which lower pH and preserve the food. In addition, many healthy compounds are produced under the fermentation.
The intestinal and overall health benefits of fermented foods have been known for many years. Fermented milk, pickles and sauerkraut are consumed for taste, but also for human health benefits. A famous Korean traditional fermented dish is Kimchi which is rich in antioxidants and vitamin C.
With the increasing globalization new dietary preferences and habits are emerging, and the market is ready for innovative products, e.g. Fermbiotics based on lactic acid bacteria fermented plant and marine material.
During fermentation of marine material and plant proteins such as seaweed and canola lactic acid bacteria modify thousands of compounds (eg. carbohydrates, lipids and natural products). This mix of lactic acid bacteria, plant protein and seaweed material, as well as the modified (via fermentation) compounds results in innovative products supporting digestive health.
